STAX Engineering does not publicly disclose barge unit prices, which makes any capital-expenditure estimate highly sensitive to assumption. Relying on an unverified figure without a direct quote from STAX risks a budget deficit if actual pricing comes in higher than estimated. A formal quote request should precede any funding commitment.
Because STAX barges are typically supplied as a service rather than sold as owned assets (STAX Engineering, 2025a), financial planning built around a one-time capital purchase may not reflect the recurring operational-cost structure the project could actually face. This changes not just the headline number but the entire shape of the budget over time.
If Sohar Port is also pursuing shore-power infrastructure in parallel, that's a second major capital outlay competing for the same budget — which arguably makes the funding case for barges harder to win, not easier, even though the two technologies address different vessels.
Five barges is a fixed capacity commitment. Port traffic and berth occupancy fluctuate across Sohar's Inner and Outer Port Basins, so there will be periods where demand exceeds five-barge capacity and periods where units sit underused. This is a structural mismatch that funding levels alone cannot fully resolve.
Without an obligation for vessels to use the service, uptake depends on operators choosing it. Sohar's existing Green Award and ESI rebates are capped at 5% (Sohar Industrial Port Company, 2025), which may not be enough on its own to make the service attractive to every vessel calling at the port. California solved this with a regulatory mandate rather than an incentive (The Maritime Executive, 2025); Oman has no equivalent requirement today.
The asthma data reflects total industrial air pollution around Sohar, not shipping alone (Al Okla et al., 2024). Barges address the at-berth vessel share of that burden — a meaningful contribution, but not a complete solution to the health outcomes documented in the surrounding communities.
